Pinterest Project: No-Sew Hair Clip Organizer! An Easy DIY Gift!

Thrifty Family Finds' No-Sew Hair Clip Organizer

My daughter C is just starting to care about “hair pretties,” as she calls them.  Rather than keeping them in a box, I thought I’d create a simple hair clip organizer to hang on her wall.  It only took me about 30 minutes and I used things I already had around the house, so it didn’t cost me anything!

This could make a great DIY gift for someone, so I took pictures along the way and now I’ll share with you how I made the one in the photo above.

What You’ll Need:

– Picture Frame

– Fabric

– Coordinating Ribbon

– Hot Glue Gun

– Scissors

– Hot Iron

– Piece of cardstock or cardboard cut to fit the frame opening – optional

(I just used the frame backing as you’ll see in the photos, but it would be a cleaner finish to glue to a piece of cardstock and then cover that with the frame back)

Step 1

Cut out a piece of fabric 1 – 2 inches bigger on all sides than the piece of cardstock/frame backing.  The measurements don’t need to be precise, it just depends on how much of the back you want to cover.

Step 2

Step 2

Iron over the two long sides of the fabric about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch, as shown above.

Step 3

Step 3

Place a line of hot glue down the edge of the fabric and fold over onto the back of the cardstock/frame backing, pressing down firmly.  If you are using the frame backing, make sure not to cover the frame hanger.  Do this with both long sides.  It will look like the one in the photo above.

Step 4

Step 4

This step is actually a couple small steps in one.  Fold the corners in, like you’re wrapping a present (shown above).  If you feel like the corners will be too bulky, try cutting out the excess folded fabric (not shown, but it’s easy to figure out).

Step 5

Step 5

Fold the raw edge in and iron it down, like you did in Step 2.  Repeat on the other end.

Step 6

Put a line of hot glue on the folded edge and fold over, pressing down firmly, like you did in Step 3.  When you are done with both ends, it should look like the picture above.

Step 7

Measure and mark where you’d like to place the ribbon.

Glue the ribbon down on the back side.  Make sure not to cover the hanger.

Step 9 – Optional

If you want to, you can cut a piece of fabric to cover the exposed back.  Just iron over the raw edges and glue the rectangle of fabric over the exposed part.  I don’t have a picture of this step, but let me know if it doesn’t make sense by leaving me a comment.

This is the final result:

This would make a great gift!  I actually made another one for a friend’s daughter as a Christmas gift, and put some cute hair clips on it.  Hopefully she’ll like it!

If you decide to make one of your own, I’d love to see pictures!  Send me an email at ThriftyFamilyFinds@gmail.com or post it on our Facebook page!
